생물자원과학부 식물자원응용과학전공은
강원대학교의 개교와 함께 시작한 최초 전공으로서, 식물을 기반으로 식량 자원, 환경 문제, 바이오 산업을 아우르는 미래 핵심 학문 분야를 다루고 기후 변화와 인구 증가 등 인류가 직면한 과제를 해결하기 위해 식물 자원의 효율적인 이용과 고부가가치 창출을 연구하고 있다. 또한 전공 교수진들은 최신 산업 트렌드와 기술 변화에 맞춰 국내외 학술지에 지속적으로 우수한 연구 결과를 발표하고 있다.
식량작물 및 기능성작물 연구를 위한 재배학, 작물학, 유전학, 육종학, 생리학, 잡초학, 형태학 등의 전통 학문에 생명공학, 유전체학, 생물공학, 친환경미생물학, 천연물화학 등의 최신 학문을 배움으로써 미래지향적인 농생명산업 분야의 인재 양성을 교육목표로 하고 있다. 이론 교육에 국한되지 않고 실험·실습 중심의 교과목을 운영하며, 학부생들에게 교수진의 연구 프로젝트에 참여할 기회를 체계적으로 제공하고 있다.
